From it´s very beginning of being a constructor in their own rights in 1970 the Tyrrell team´s model designation was identical with the chassis number. The Tyrrell Ford 001, that had made it´s first appearance in the Monza practice in fact was a re-design of the Matra Ford MS80, that had taken Jackie Stewart to the world title in 1969. But instead following the trend the Lotus Ford 72 had shown that year, Tyrrell designer Derek Gardner decided to modify the concept of the 001 for the 1971 Grand Prix season. Three new chassis, the 002, 003 and 004 were built that year.

After having won both the drivers`and the constructors`worldchampionship in 1971 Gardner now dared to bring out that design that he originally had scheduled for that season the following year of 1972. The Tyrrell Ford 005, that made it´s debut appearance in the practice for the French Grand Prix at Clermont Ferrand with François Cevert in the cockpit, can not deny the relationship to the Lotus Ford 72. As the Chapman product it is wedge-shaped and has got lateral radiators and front brake discs inside the bodywork. The car had been presented with the sportscar nose first being introduced for the 001 - 004 types in mid-1971. But at the end of 1973, the 005/006 has got a flat nose during the practice for the Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport that made it look like a blue Lotus 72.

During the practice of the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami Jackie Stewart had a highspeed accident caused by a rear brake failure in the 005. For that reason he had to switch to Cevert`s car, the 006, and inspite of this car being absolutely identical to the 005, the F.I.A. did not accept it, so Stewart had to qualify again with the 006, with that he won the race inspite of being only 17th on the grid.

After that a new chassis, the 006/2, was built, that became Stewarts regular car for the rest of the 1973 season, while the repaired 005 became the spare car of the team. That year Stewart did not only win his third worldchampionship title, he also broke Jim Clark`s record to take that to 27 victories overall. At the end of 1973 Stewart realized a plan he had made very early that year: He retired from active competition after 3 titles and 25 wins with the team of former woodcutter Ken Tyrrell.

But also tragedy came the team`s way. During the qualifying for the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen the 006 of Tyrrell`s designated number one, François Cevert took off the track and jumped onto the armco barrier upside down. The man from France had no chance to survive.
